Components of a Fine Preacher

Most people will list speaking appeal and ability to draw a crowd as major elements in identifying a fine preacher. I differ. After 40 plus years of delivering from behind or in front of a pulpit, here's what I think are the main traits a Christian preacher should possess:

#1 Personal Stability. He or she should basically be a healthy person, one who thinks clearly and is physically able to carry out a preacher's  tasks.

#2 An accurate understanding of the faith he or she proclaims. This may surprise people, especially those who think every preacher has such an understanding. Not so. In fact, that notion is blatantly wrong. Too many so-called "preachers" deliver sermons that are in no way connected to the basic teachings of Jesus, like, the false notiono that the sign of a good Christian is that he or she can make lots and lots of money.

#3 A love of all people and for the whole of the world. Again, too many of those who claim to be preachers care mainly, and often only, for the people who are like them, meaning of the same race and nationality plus speaking mainly the same language. By contrast, Jesus of Nazareth set no boundaries on his love. He was open to one and all and in full and complete appreciation for the whole of God's creation.

#4 Devotion to work. Good preaching requires great preparation. To do it, one must know the Bible and its primary teachings. Also, a fine preacher knows the most important developments in the history of Christianity.

#5 Good Speaking ability, meaning tjat he or must be able to articulate the Gsspel well enough for others to hear and understand it. A good preacher does not mumble nor stumble concerning what he or she firmly believes.

Fine preachers, they're had to find. That's for sure!
